The path to an eating disorder is a complex one. These disorders arise
from a combination of genetic, environmental, and individual factors
that are unique for each person. Thus, we feel that the effective treatment
of this disorder must address this multi-faceted disease by enlisting
the person and her/his social context in the treatment process.
Eating disorder treatment is an exploration. This exploration involves
both determining current distressing symptoms for the individual and
determining how these symptoms are helping the individual to cope with
her/his current life circumstances. To be effective, treatment addresses
the symptoms themselves, determines the function of these symptoms for
the person, and teaches alternative coping strategies.
Inherent in this approach is our belief that an individual has the
capacity to seek a new path while benefiting from the knowledge gleaned
from previous experiences. Our treatment team can serve as a guide and
consultant to the individual as she/he travels along a new, sometimes
difficult, but rewarding journey.
